Find the perfect duvet cover can be tough—after all, there’s a whole sea of options in different styles and at a variety of price points. However, this classic cotton model from Brooklinen manages to toe the line between trendy and timeless with its high-quality material and vibrant color and pattern options. To see if this duvet cover lived up to its great reputation, my partner and I tested it out by sleeping on it for a week straight. Ahead, we break down the pros and cons when it comes to material, design, durability, and more.
Material and Weave: High-quality cotton
This duvet cover is made from long-staple cotton, which is a type of cotton plant that produces fibers—or staples—longer than 34 millimeters. Generally, the longer the fiber, the better the cotton will be in terms of quality. This duvet cover also has a thread count of 270 and a percale weave, meaning it’s made from both combed and carded cotton yarns. Percale fabric tends to have a crisp, smooth texture because it’s lightweight and its yarns are closely woven. This duvet cover is also OEKO-TEX-certified for chemical safety, so you won’t have to worry about any harmful materials (or any off-gassing smell) when you’re sleeping with this product. I’m a particularly hot sleeper, and I found this duvet cover to be light and breathable—not once did I wake up sweating in the middle of the night. Also, although I didn’t try this myself, one of our editors likes that this duvet cover can do double duty as a heavier-weight sheet without a comforter. You just may need an extra blanket to stay warm during the winter months.
Design: Tons of fun patterns to choose from
Brooklinen offers this duvet cover in classic colors—think neutrals and timeless patterns like grids and stripes—in addition to several limited-edition options. We chose to test the limited-edition lunar design, a bold hyper-blue with cream squiggles. In our bedroom, which has a mostly neutral palette, it was just enough of a pop of color without going overboard. (This particular pattern is no longer available on the site, but there are other similarly vibrant options.) This duvet cover fits mattresses up to 15 inches tall, so this is something to take into consideration if you have an extra sleeping pad or an unusually high mattress. My partner and I have a full-size bed and didn’t have any issue with sizing, even with an extra comfort pad on our mattress. However, some online reviewers wished they’d purchased a larger size to ensure that there’s extra cover falling over the edge of the bed.
Texture: Crisp to the touch
This duvet cover greets you with a cool, crisp texture that’s especially nice during the hot summer months. Its pattern is very clearly woven in, not painted on or embroidered, and it has a smooth, matte finish. I noticed that a few wrinkles popped up after sleeping with this duvet cover for a while, but not enough to bring out a steamer.
Washing: Easy
Generally, duvet covers require less maintenance than comforters—plus, cotton is an easy material to clean. Brooklinen recommends machine-washing this duvet cover in cold water with a natural detergent and then tumble-drying it on low. My partner and I followed the instructions and had no issues. After the dryer cycle ended, I removed the duvet cover immediately but still found a few wrinkles. If you left it in the dryer for a while post-wash, I think you’d see many more wrinkles—something to note if you like a clean and smooth bed. Overall, though, the duvet cover felt just as new after several washes as it did when we unboxed it.
Durability: Softer after washing
As mentioned before, the feel of this duvet cover is high-quality and didn’t diminish after washing it. If anything, this duvet cover gets softer with use. Also, given that the pattern is woven in, I wouldn’t expect any significant fading, either.
Features: Large button closures add to the utility
One thing my partner and I both found really helpful about this duvet cover was the large buttons, which helped keep the duvet insert inside the cover. I always find myself struggling with tiny button closures, but I had these figured out in no time. Also, after looking through online reviews, it seems Brooklinen made the buttons even larger after customers made the suggestion—another thing I appreciated from the brand. There are also ties on each corner of the duvet cover to help the comforter stay in place inside.
Price: Competitive, given the choice in patterns and color
This duvet cover retails at $109 (Twin), $119 (Full/Queen), or $129 (King/California King). The price point falls right in between “wow, that’s expensive” and “reasonable” compared to the competition. However, for a high-quality cotton duvet cover with eye-catching color options, we think this is a fantastic deal. Plus, Brooklinen has a generous warranty—if you aren’t 100 percent satisfied with your product, the company offers free exchanges and replacements—which increases the value substantially.
Competition: Stands out from the pack
Simply put, there are a lot of companies out there selling duvet covers. Head to a site like Wayfair and you’ll find plenty of less expensive options, but the designs and color options are more likely to appear slightly outdated or overly manufactured. It also depends on the finish you’re looking for—for example, Parachute’s sateen duvet cover will cost you around $50 more per size. Overall, it isn’t hard to find a more inexpensive duvet cover than this one, but if you’re looking for quality in a wide variety of colors and patterns, Brooklinen stands out among the competition.
